Thabang's interest in art began at a very young age. He was inspired by the cartoons he watched on TV and the Dragon Ball Z stickers he collected. "I started doing art at a very young age," he recalls. "I became interested in drawing because of watching everyday cartoons that I see on TV and buying Dragon Ball Z stickers and practicing on scrapbooks and on chalk at school when there's no teacher in the classroom or during lunch time."
His classmates were quick to notice his talent. "My classmates enjoyed seeing me draw a city of Johannesburg with cars, bridges, buildings, people, and roads. They would tell me how good my work is," Thabang remembers. This encouragement from his peers motivated him to continue honing his craft.
"Whenever it's project time, some would dispute and try to make sure I become part of them because I always come up with the best crazy amazing ideas and make sure we stand on position one or two for getting good marks."

One of Thabang's biggest inspirations is Fhatuwani Mukheli, a well-known visual artist who has become his mentor. Their first meeting was a pivotal moment for Thabang. "Our first meet-up, I felt as if I was dreaming. He invited me to his art studio based in 44 Stanley, Johannesburg. I created amazing art for him so that he could see how good I am at doing portraits. I decided to draw him and frame the artwork."

Attending art exhibitions in Cape Town for two years opened numerous doors for Thabang. Despite not selling any artwork at his first exhibition, he received plenty of applause and motivation. "I learned that being invited to exhibitions doesn't mean you must always focus on selling your work. You have to communicate, share contacts, and ask for feedback to keep getting opportunities," he explains. These experiences have taught him the importance of networking and staying visible in the art community.
This mentorship has significantly impacted Thabang's artistic journey. "Things changed when it comes to my drawing techniques, skills, marketing skills, for example, how to price my work and making sure I always work on something new every week to get opportunities such as interviews and clients," Thabang explains.

"The knowledge of knowing the art game, how to get into art galleries and exhibitions, but that mustn't be the only focus. I have to learn my art style and create work, keep it safe, and I mustn't stress about when I am going to be successful. I must keep on enjoying the journey and producing more work. My time to shine like him will come soon."
Thabang's artistic style has evolved over the years, often through a process of trial and error. "My artistic style over the years was bad and sometimes good because I was practicing every day and night to get better and improve my craft," he says. His journey has been filled with both challenges and successes. "It's been ups and downs through getting bad and good responses with the art I do from people. Sometimes I would feel like quitting art."
Thabang prefers using materials such as charcoal, oil, soft pastels, and paint, which help him achieve the desired texture, smooth shading, and bright coloring in his work.Despite the challenges, Thabang stays motivated by constantly learning and staying active in his art. "I stay motivated all the time because of watching art programs on YouTube and I keep myself busy. I learn new things about my art and life, health, to keep remaining focused," he says.
Thabang's art inspires people, giving them hope and touching their souls in ways words cannot. He aims to enable other artists to market their work, connect globally, and seize opportunities through galleries and exhibitions. His advice to aspiring artists is to "have no fear, be ready for opportunities, and keep pushing every day. Create work for love, not for fame or applause."
Looking ahead, Thabang has big dreams. He plans to attend more exhibitions, work on large-scale projects, and collaborate with international artists and brands. "I dream of being invited to international exhibitions and galleries, making powerful sales, and collaborating with legendary artists," he shares.

Currently working from his home studio, Thabang's goal is to acquire a larger art studio to create bigger artworks and feel free when using paints. He remains focused on his values, health, and time management. "I spend most of my time thinking about what is important to me in life. I set boundaries, focus on my health, and take regular breaks," he concludes.
Thabang Phiri's journey as a self-taught visual artist is a story of passion, perseverance, and continuous growth. From his early days of drawing in classrooms to creating intricate portraits and cityscapes, Thabang's dedication to his craft shines through. With the guidance of his mentor and his unyielding motivation, Thabang is poised to continue inspiring others and achieving greater heights in the art world.
