It was a moment filled with emotion and surprise when Jason Willemse was recognized as the best actor in Africa. In the heart of Johannesburg, amid glitz, glamour, and a sea of dazzling lights, Jason Willemse's name reverberated through the packed auditorium as the winner of the "Best Actor in Africa" at the prestigious Shining Stars Africa Awards 2024 on the 3rd of August.
With a career-defining role as Cameron on the popular ETV soapie Scandal!, Willemse captivated audiences across the continent, making him a household name and a beacon of talent in African cinema.However, with him having to land a role as Cameron on Scandal!, one of the most-watched shows in South Africa, his portrayal of the complex, layered character quickly garnered critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase.
"It was my breakout role, and I learned a lot on the set," he says.
It was here that he met and formed lasting friendships, including with Brighton Ngoma, who played Quinton. “I have learned a lot from him, like standing up for what is right in the industry,” he shares. Winning the award for the “Best Actor in Africa” has been a remarkable milestone for many, but for Jason Willemse, it was a deeply personal and unexpected honour.
"It was a surreal moment because it came as a surprise," he shares.
The moment he heard his name announced as the winner is something he will never forget. “I was backstage preparing to model for Tshegofatso By Design when they called me to come on stage. I was in shock because my wife was halfway through her acceptance speech,” he added.
His experience working on the project that earned him the award was nothing short of delightful. “The production company Known Associates is like a family. Everyone on set is so friendly and professional. I love working with the cast and crew,” he says.
"I was nominated last year for a SAFTA and NFTA for best and supporting actor for uBettina Wethu but didn't win. It was a beautiful moment for me because my wife and two beautiful little girls prayed for me for moments like these. To God be the glory."
In an interview with the Mondays.mag Willemse shares that growing up in a small town where there were no drama schools or classes, Willemse always had a deep curiosity about the world of television.
“I watched many movies when I was young. I was always curious about how the TV industry works,” he recalls. His passion for acting led him to study drama in Cape Town, where he was chosen to further his studies at the Tshwane University of Technology.
As for the future, there's much on the horizon for Jason Willemse. He is currently involved in an exciting new TV series, although he remains tight-lipped about the details. “ can’t say what it is yet, but it will show a different side of me,” he hints.
Looking ahead, Willemse envisions himself branching out into directing over the next 5 to 10 years.
“I feel like now is the time for me to collaborate with the rest of Africa on upcoming projects,” he shares.
Receiving the award for Best Actor in Africa is more than just an accolade for Jason Willemse.
"I am hoping it will open more doors for me as an actor and put me in bigger circles in the industry," he concludes.
With his dedication, passion, and the recognition he’s garnered, there is no doubt that the future is bright for this talented actor.
