Alistair Aroomugam is a name that resonates within the hallowed halls of contemporary

photography. A founder and CEO of Raw Emotion photography. A maverick with a camera, Alistair's journey began under the vast skies of Durban, where the play of light across the prairies taught him the art of patience and the beauty of simplicity. In his inspiration to start photography, Alistair claims that he has always loved playing with his phone taking pictures, till when his brother bought a DSLR camera to use and he started fiddling around it, and this gave him the spirit to attend a local car show and that’s when the bug bit.

Alistair started his career in Photography on 2017, with a keen eye for the interplay of

light and shadow, Alistair’s photographs soon began to tell stories of the places and

people they encountered.

“In a nut shell, I attended the University of YouTube ha-ha! I think the way I learnt was

putting myself in the deep end and learning as I shoot as well as not being afraid to ask

as many questions as possible, up until now, I still ask my peers questions if I don't

know”, he says

What sets Alistair apart is his ability to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. He simply

begins preparing for a shoot by creating a Pinterest board which is shared with the

client as well. He tells the Monday Magazine that this guides him whilst shooting for

posing ideas. This way also makes the clients to be less nervous.

Alistair's work is inspired by the 4 best photographers of all times.“Sherwin Pather, This guy right here influenced me to tackle off camera flash and as well as being influential in my journey shooting Fujifilm, I have always looked up to his work and would rate him as one of the best in SA.

Yajur Chotai - The wedding content Yajur pushes out just amazes me all the time, and I

am always intrigued by his technique and quality he produces Peter McKinnon - known to many, Peter Mckinnon has been my source of knowledge from the time i started shooting, this being learning about gear, filters and even knowing how to shoot, what settings to use, how to edit on Lightroom and the list goes on, I should watch his videos religiously everyday as it was posted.

Chris haul - for any automotive photographer, I would highly recommend them to watch

his channel on YouTube, he has a wealth of knowledge, going in depth about shooting

vehicles as well as his way of shooting vehicles”, he added The path of a photographer is not without its hurdles. Alistair speaks candidly about how sometimes he simply goes creatively blank mid shoot and sometimes gets challenged about the sudden change of the weather whilst shooting, where he had to think for a sheltered location, which is the hardest thing to find in Durban, he tells the

Mondays.

Through the hard challenges he has faced he still managed to work with the South

African leading brands, in collaboration he has a relationship with the Fujifilm South

Africa and Photofreedom Durban North. Alistair has also worked in bigger gigs where he

has attended a few automotive events that has taken place in Durban resulting into

being the biggest automotive events.

The photographer attract clients by advertising his content on his socials and referrals

from his clients to others to gain new clients and audience. He also wishes to have

more shooters under the Raw Emotion Photography umbrella.

As technology evolves, so does the art of photography. Alistair embraces these

changes, seeing them as tools to further enhance their storytelling. With several

projects on the horizon, including a photo-documentary on urban life, Alistair's journey is far from over.
